Designing for faceted crystal
Facets catch and redirect light, so the clearest central face is used as the principal viewing area. The layout must avoid competing with the bevelled edges while leaving enough space for the image, inscription and dates to be read as one composition.
Preparing portrait artwork
A photograph cannot simply be transferred unchanged. Tonal detail, background information and very fine features need to be interpreted so the portrait remains recognisable at the available size. The image is prepared with the crystal shape and final viewing distance in mind, while unnecessary detail is reduced where it would weaken the result.
Combining image and lettering
Portrait work and text require different visual treatment. The curved inscription follows the upper form of the crystal, framing the central image rather than crossing it. The dates sit separately below, creating a clear reading order and preventing the small engraving area from becoming crowded.
Production and final inspection
The engraving method is selected according to the crystal, artwork and detail required. Positioning is particularly important because an error is more noticeable on a symmetrical display piece. Once complete, the image, lettering, spacing and overall alignment are checked under different light before the crystal is prepared for presentation.
A lasting commemorative object
Similar crystal pieces can record anniversaries, milestones, retirements, memorials and personal achievements. Photographs, exact wording, dates and the dimensions of the item provide the best starting point for assessing a bespoke commission.
